A Study on the Ecological Factors Affecting the Death Anxiety among the Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the death anxiety of elderly people from the ecological perspective. The subjects for this study consisted of 236 elderly over 60 years old in Daegu city. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN(ver. 15.0) program, and factor analysis, frequencies, ANOVA, Tukey HSD, correlation, hierarchial regression were utilized. The results were as follows. First, the respondents¡¯ overall death anxiety score was 2.57(¡¾.38), and ¡®anxiety in the dying process¡¯(2.74) had the highest points among sub-dimensions. Second, depression and ego integrity were out of the individual factors influencing the death anxiety of elderly. Social activities and familism were out of the socio-environment factors influencing the death anxiety of elderly. Third, it was analyzed the relative significances of variables contributing to the death anxiety of elderly. It was found that there was no significant factor in social background. On the other hand, the degree of the depression from the individual factors, and familism, social activities, and social support from the socio-environment factors were found to be very significant in contributing the death anxiety of elderly.
